How to File Income Tax Return (ITR) Online

File Income Tax Return Online.

Income Tax Return (ITR) file in two ways:

1. Through Offline:

Download the applicable ITR, fill out the form offline, save and upload the generated XML file.

  • Go to Income Tax E-Filing Portal website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
  • Download the appropriate ITR utility and ‘Downloads> IT Return Generation Software’.
  • Extract the downloaded utility ZIP file and open the utility from the folder. (For more information and preconditions, click on the ‘Read Me’ option).
  • Fill the applicable.
  • Validate all the tabs on the ITR form
  • Create and save XML.
  • Enter your User ID (PAN), Password and Captcha Code and log in to the e-Filing Portal and click on ‘Login’.
  • Click on the ‘E-File’ menu and then the ‘Income Tax Return’ link.
  • On the Income Tax Return Page:

The pan will be populated automatically

Select ‘Evaluation Year’
enter ‘ITR Form Number’
Select ‘Filing Type’ as ‘Original / Renewed Return’
Click ‘Submission Mode’ as ‘Upload XML’

  • To check your income tax return choose one of the following options
  • Something like Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Aadhaar OTP
  • Now click to ‘Continue’.
  • Attach the ITR XML file. When selecting,
  • Attach the signature file generated by the DSC Management Utility as DSC confirmation option.
  • For Aadhaar OTP Verification Option, enter the Aadhaar OTP received on the mobile number registered with UIDAI.
  • As a verification option, enter the EVC through the bank account, demat account or bank ATM and the EVC received at the mobile number registered in the bank or demat account, respectively.
  • The other two verification options will be submitted by the ITR, but the ITR filing process will not be completed until it is verified. The submitted ITR should then be e-verified using the ‘My Account> e-Verify Return’ option , or the signed ITR-V sent to CPC, Bangalore.
  • Submit  and to view uploaded ITR.

2. Through Online :

  • Go to Income Tax e-Filing Portal website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
  • Enter your User ID (PAN), Password and Captcha Code and log in to the e-Filing Portal and click on ‘Login’.
  • Click on the ‘E-File’ menu and then the ‘Income Tax Return’ link.
  • On the Income Tax Return Page:

The pan will be populated automatically
Select ‘Evaluation Year’
enter ‘ITR Form Number’
select ‘Filing Type’ as ‘Original / Renewed Return’
click ‘Submission Mode’ as ‘Upload XML’

  • Tap ‘Continue’.
  • Read the instructions carefully and fill in all the applicable and mandatory fields in the ITR form through online.
  • From the ‘Taxes Paid and Verification’ tab, select the appropriate option. Choose from the following options .
  • I will be able to e-verify within 120 days from the date of filing.
  • I do not wish to e-verify, I would like to send the signed ITR-V by regular or speed post to “Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bangalore – 560 500” within 120 days.
  • Click on the ‘Preview and Submit’ check all the data entered in the ITR.
  • ‘Submit’ ITR.

Last Date for Filing Income Tax Return.

An income tax refund can only be claimed when you file an ITR. However, if you omit the ITR filing deadline, you may file a late return on or before December 31 of the assessment year. Failure to file the return will result in a fine of Rs 5,000. However, if the the fee payable is Rs. 1,000 income of the individual is less than Rs. 5 lakhs.

Generally, the last date for filing income tax returns for individuals and non-audit cases is July 31st, and October 31st for audit cases in the relevant assessment year.

How to pay income tax after the end date?

If you are unable to pay the tax and file the return within the due date, you will have to pay the late filing penalty and interest when filing the late return. The penalty for late filing of return is Rs.5000.
However, if the total income of the individual is less than Rs. 5 lakhs, the fee payable is Rs. 1,000,not include additional fee.
